About this Book
Chanukah is one of the most luminous and mysterious of all Yamim Tov/ Holidays, at once simple and profound, intimate and cosmic. Marked by the lighting of small flames in the darkness, songs of praise and thanksgiving, and the remembrance of an unlikely victory. Yet beneath the familiar glow of the Menorah lies a compelling mystery: Why is light at the very heart of Chanukah? What is the deeper meaning behind the miracle of the oil, the victory of the few over the many, and the unique practices of these eight days?
This book invites the reader on a rich and illuminating journey into the inner world of Chanukah. Moving seamlessly across all four levels of Torah interpretation, Peshat (the plain meaning), Remez (allusion), Derush (homiletical insight), and Sod (the esoteric teachings of Kabbalah and Chassidus), it weaves a multidimensional tapestry of meaning that reveals Chanukah's hidden depths. In doing so, Chanukah is transformed from a commemoration of an ancient miracle into a gateway to profound spiritual awakening.
Along the way, familiar themes and customs take on new life: the lighting of the Menorah, the miracle of the oil, the struggle between the Greeks and the Maccabees, the significance of eight days, the placement of the lights at the doorway, the prayers of Hallel and thanksgiving, the mystery of the Dreidel and the eating of oily foods. Each is shown to reflect deep spiritual dynamics, light and darkness, wisdom and holiness, intellect and revelation, the natural and the miraculous, spiritual resistance and renewal, and the power of a single flame to illuminate even the deepest darkness.
Ultimately, this book reveals that Chanukah is a revelation of the indestructible light, the Hidden Cosmic Light, which is a light that can be obscured but never extinguished, and that shines most powerfully precisely when the surrounding darkness seems greatest.
