About this Book
There was once a chossid who became known for a unique habit; he would translate every word of his prayers into Yiddish, His friends, puzzled by this practice, asked him what he hoped to achieve.
He explained:
"My yetzer hara understands Yiddish better than Hebrew. I want to speak to him directly, to confront him face-to-face, and say: Mister, what you're doing is wrong.
I believe in Hashem, and I will do whatever Hashem desires!'" In these few words, the chossid captured the essence of prayer. Davening is not merely the recitation of sacred texts. It is the act of binding ourselves to Hashem, standing humbly as a servant before his Master, and engaging in the inner struggle to overcome the yetzer hara.
This is why understanding the meaning of the words we say is so vital. Prayer without comprehension risks becoming mechanical, while prayer with awareness carries the power to transform. Even the simplest kavanah — a basic mindfulness of what we are saying - can elevate our tefillah into a true dialogue with Hashem.
